Abstract
<PICT:1071098/C1/1> A method of producing graphite electrodes comprises forming in a furnace 1, 6, from a green electrode mass GE, a continuous strand KS whose cross-section corresponds to that of the electrodes to be produced, advancing the strand and simultaneously baking it at coking temperature, then graphitizing the coked strand without intermediate cooling, followed by severing electrode portions from the graphitized strand whilst still hot. The green mass of granular anthracite, granular coke and tar or pitch, fed through the furnace 1, 6, under compressed air or hydraulic pressure, is heated and shaped when doughy at 120 DEG C. in Zone Z1, solidifies to form a strand at 500-600 DEG C. in Zone Z2, is baked and coked at 1300-1500 DEG C. in Zone Z3, graphitized at 2500-3000 DEG C. in Zone Z4 and cools in Zone Z5 after being severed into individual electrodes, and discharged by a holding and lowering device (Fig. 5, not shown) into cooling carriage 10, in which it is covered by a lining of granular coke 13 to prevent oxidation. The coke introduced through funnel 7 also acts as a protective lining for the furnace part 6.
