Abstract

A copper base alloy intended for use at a predetermined temperature includes at least two alloying ingredients, each having a maximum solid solubility in copper of at least 0.5% by weight and present in concentration ratios such that on heating to the predetermined temperature they diffuse to the surface of the alloy and form a complex oxide; the complex oxide must have the following characteristics: - (a) a melting point above 1300 DEG C., (b) less than 0.5% solid solubility by weight for copper oxides and (c) less than 2% solid solubility by weight for the individual oxide components of the complex oxide. At least 0.1% of an additional element, which generates a cation having a valence state of at least two and which has a maximum solid solubility in copper greater than 0.5% by weight may be present in the alloy. This additional element may be one of the specified alloying ingredients. Exemplified alloying ingredients are Al, Si and Al, Be.
