Abstract
PhSnX3, wherein X is halogen is reacted with a phenyl alkali metal compound to give Ph4Sn, which is then reacted with SnX4 to give Ph3SnX and PhSnX3, the PhSnX3 being recycled. Example 1 describes the preparation of Ph4Sn by reacting Na with chlorobenzene, under N2, in petroleum ether, adding RhSnCl3 thereto and filtering off the Ph4Sn. Examples 1 and 3 describe the reaction of the Ph4Sn and SnX4 by heating them together under reduced pressure, e.g. 10 mm., at 120 DEG c. to distil off PhSnX3 and leaving a residue of Ph3SnX. Alternatively, the Ph4Sn and SnX4, may be heated together in a solvent, e.g. dibutyl ether, benzene, petroleum ether, from which Ph3SnX ppts. on cooling. Product Ph3SnCl may be hdrolysed with NaOH to form to the oxide and then reacted with CH3COOH to form the acetate.
