Abstract

Slow discharge of residual combustible gas, e.g. butane through the gas outlet opening of a discarded liquid butane container (1), Fig: 1 (not shown) following removal therefrom of a conventional discharge valve is effected past a relief valve member (9), Fig. 3 (not shown) which partly obturates an orifice (6) in the base of a cup-shaped member (4) secured by a flange (5) to the interior wall of the container so as to surround said outlet opening; the member (9) being urged, e.g. by its inherent resilience away from the orifice (6) whilst the discharge valve is connected and being urged towards the orifice when internal gas pressure greatly exceeds that at the discharge outlet and which occurs when the discharge valve is removed. The slow discharge of gas is intended to minimize the formation of an explosive mixture with air. The valve member (9) is of steel or resilient plastic material riveted to the cup-bottom (7). The member may be a disc (25), Fig. 23 (not shown) floatingly mounted between the apertured base of cup member (4) and the apertured base of a further cup-member (29) secured therebeneath. In a further modification the member comprises a ball (31), Fig. 25 (not shown) bearing against a conical seat (32) surrounding orifice (6) and retained by interior lugs (34) of a cylindrical sleeve (35).
