Abstract
A hard synthetic wax comprises at least one copolymer of propylene and a straight chain aliphatic a -monoolefine containing at least 5 carbon atoms and has a density less than 0.93, a melting-point below 150 DEG C. an acid number of substantially zero and a molecular weight of 3000-8000. The wax may be made by thermal degradation of the corresponding copolymer which has a molecular weight greater than 20,000. It is also stated that the wax may be prepared by direct polymerization of the monomers in the presence of hydrogen using as catalyst a mixture of aluminium diethyl chloride and titanium trichloride. The exemplified polymer is a copolymer of propylene and hexene-1. The waxes may be made emulsifiable by oxidation.ALSO:A floor tile is coated with an aqueous emulsion comprising a copolymer wax which is an air-oxidised copolymer of hexene and propylene which before oxidation had a density of less than 0.93, a melting point below 150 DEG , an acid number of zero, and a molecular weight in the range 3000-8000. Other olefines containing five or more carbon atoms may be used instead of hexene and the polymer waxes may be used unoxidised. The coating may also include paraffin wax and polyethylene wax. It may also be coated in the molten state or to paper and foil.
