Abstract

A polyolefine wax, which comprises a copolymer of butene-1 and a straight chain aliphatic a -mono-olefine containing at least 3 carbon atoms, has a density less than 0.93, a meltingpoint below 150 DEG C., an acid number of zero and a molecular weight of 3000 to 8000. The wax may be prepared by thermal degradation of a corresponding copolymer having a molecular weight of greater than 20,000, or the wax may be made by direct polymerization of the monomers at a temperature of 0 DEG to 100 DEG C., using a catalyst mixture comprising TiCl3 and aluminium diethyl monochloride in the presence of hydrogen or other chain transfer agent. The waxes may be rendered emulsifiable in water by reacting with oxygen at 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. until an acid number of 2 to 20 is achieved.ALSO:Paper board is curtain-coated with a copolymer wax which is a copolymer of butene-1 and a straight chain aliphatic a -monoolefine containing at least 3 carbon atoms and which has a density less than 0.93, a melting point below 150 DEG C., an acid number of zero and a molecular weight of 3000-8000. The coated board may then have food placed upon it and the whole assembly may be further curtain coated. The examplified comonomer is propylene. The waxes of the invention may be made emulsifiable in water by controlled oxidation. In Example 5 an oxidised propylene-butene-1 wax is used to coat paper and aluminium foil. The waxes may be blended with natural or synthetic waxes such as paraffin wax and polypropylene wax.
