Abstract

A particulate composition for use as detergent, which is dry, substantially dust-free, free-flowing and contains alkali metal hydroxide, is produced by mixing a particulate alkali metal hydroxide with an aqueous inorganic solution, e.g. containing caustic soda or an alkali metal silicate, of such a nature and in a quantity sufficient to form non-coherent particles having a coating of the solution of the surface thereof, and adding thereto a solid (e.g. alkali metal phosphates, carbonates, borates, sulphates, silicates, gluconates) of particle size substantially smaller than that of the particulate alkali metal hydroxide and in an amount sufficient to produce the required composition. The hygroscopicity and homogeneity of the composition are improved by this means.ALSO:A dry, substantially dust-free, free-flowing, particulate composition containing alkali metal hydroxide is produced by admixing a particulate alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. caustic soda) with an aqueous inorganic solution (e.g. containing caustic soda or an alkali metal silicate) of such a nature and in a quantity sufficient to form non-coherent particles having a coating of the solution on the surface thereof and adding thereto a solid (e.g. alkali metal phosphates, carbonates, borates, sulphates, silicates, gluconates) of particle size substantially smaller than that of the particulate alkali metal hydroxide and in an amount sufficient to produce the required composition. The hygroscopicity and homogeneity are improved by this means. Hydroxides of sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium and cesium alone and in combination are referred to.
