Abstract

A method of producing a sheet of wood veneer comprises corrugating the sheet by passing it when in a supple condition through the nip formed between two movable opposed surfaces having teeth, splines, ridges or the like thereon, the corrugations being made across the grain preferably at an angle of 90 degrees. The sheet is made supple by steaming or steeping in cold or hot liquid and passed through the nip in such a manner that the corrugations 11, Fig. 3, are formed at substantially 90 degrees to the direction of the grain 12. The nip may be formed by a pair of intermeshing splined rollers 40, 41, Fig. 12, roller 41 being driven by a motor 44 and roller 40 being adjustable. Alternatively, the nip may be formed by a pair of endless bands running over blocks or rollers. The corrugated veneer sheets may be assembled in a stack, each sheet being coated with a bonding material, such as a resin glue, and the stack be placed in a press which compresses the stack and forms arches 14, Fig. 5, in a single direction parallel or perpendicular to the corrugations or in a plurality of directions. The press 80, Fig. 19, has upper and lower elements 84, 86, each of which has a number of rollers 85, 87 held in position by wires 72, Fig. 17, which also act to retain the-corrugations during the forming of the arches on the stack. The surfaces of the stack can then be machined flat to exhibit an artificial grain formation. Sheets of veneer may be made from the block or a part of the block, say ¢ inch thick, may be used for making an article, such as a table or tea-tray.
