Abstract

Tetrachlorothiophene is prepared by heating sulphur with trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, or hexachloroethane or a mixture thereof. It is preferred to effect the reaction at 150-600 DEG C. under 10-30 atmos. pressure. A high boiling diluent may be used in the reaction system. The product is isolated by heating the reaction mixture with water, to hydrolyse the sulphur chloride by-products, followed by steam distillation. Examples are provided.
