Abstract

1,069,713. Carding engines; drafting rollers; stop motions; changing sliver cans. MAREMONT CORPORATION. May 7, 1964 [May 7, 1963], No. 19106/64. Headings D1D, D1F and D1N. In a carding engine arrangement a signal is emitted when a predetermined quantity of sliver has been collected e.g. in a can, said signal putting into operation control means which causes the doffer cylinder to be driven at creep speed and the sliver collecting means to be exchanged for an empty means, the control means causing the doffer to be driven at normal speed when the collecting means has been exchanged. General arrangement As shown, a number of cards 20a, 20b, 20c are arranged side by side to feed slivers onto a common table 50 to pass to a drafting arrangement 100 whereafter the sliver is coiled into a can F. Driving arrangement The shafts of the main cylinders are coupled at 38 and driven from a motor 64; each lickerin 24 is driven from the main cylinder shaft. An electric brake 67 is provided for the cylinders. Motor 64 also drives a transmission device 80 which has output shafts 81, 82. Shaft 82 passes drive via a shaft 70 common to the carding enginges, to the doffers 30 the feed rolls 28 and the calender rolls 34. Shaft 70 also drives rollers 52, 54 which forward the slivers along table 50. Shaft 82 transmits drive to the rollers of the drafting device 100 via a device 102 which incorporates a magnetically controlled clutch and a brake. Driven from the drive to the drafting rollers is a device 105 which totals the sliver delivered and emits a signal to initiate can changing. Changing cans When device 105 indicates that can F is full it emits a signal which causes shafts 81, 82 of transmission device 80 to be driven at a creep speed; thus the doffer and all elements driven therewith are driven at a creep speed. The signal also causes the drive to the drafting rollers to be interrupted and the rollers braked by device 102. Subsequently as determined by time delay devices valves 132, 142 of pneumatic plunger devices 130, 140 are actuated to remove the full can F and push an empty can E into its place. Thereafter all elements are automatically brought back to normal speed. The whole operation may be manually initiated. Storing sliver During can changing slivers continue to be fed by rollers 54 and these accumulate in a can 58. To empty this when normal operation is resumed the intake drafting rollers are driven at a slightly faster speed than the rollers 54. Drafting arrangement; stopping machine on lap formation. The drafting arrangement comprises, see Figs. 7, 8, 9 not shown, magnetically weighted rollers, the top rollers (111, 113, 115, 117) being rotatably mounted in blocks (139) vertically slidable in slots in blocks (150-156) mounted to be adjustable in the direction of sliver travel on a pair of bars (122, 124). Bars (122, 124) are pivotally mounted at one end to the frame (120) and are supported adjacent the other by switches (108, 109) on member (121) mounted on the frame. If a sliver forms a lap on one of the drafting rollers the associated top roller is raised to lift one or both of blocks (139) into contact with an adjustable stop 170 on blocks (150) thereafter one or both of arms (122, 124) is raised to operate either or both of switches (108, 109). As a result a red signal is switched on, drive to the drafting rollers is interrupted and the rollers braked, the doffers and the associated driven element are driven at creep speed, the main motor 64 switch off and the main cylinder brake 67 operated. Sliver guide; stopping machine on sliver breakage. The sliver from each card passes through a guide 40, see also Figs. 5, 6 not shown, which comprises upstanding portions (42, 46) with a channel therebetween and a tongue (47) overlying the channel. Built into opposite walls of the channel are a light source and a photo-cell. When the cell detects the absence of a sliver a yellow light is lit and the apparatus stopped as described above.
