Abstract

<PICT:1069430/C1/1> Litharge is produced by feeding molten lead into an oxide pot of the Barton type in a continuous stream at a rate which maintains the contents of the pot at a temperature of at least 621 DEG F. (the melting point of metallic lead) but below 900 DEG F., vigorously agitating the pot contents by means of a stirrer which throws the pot contents against a large fixed baffle, introducing a stream of air into the pot, and maintaining the pot free from any pool of molten metallic lead, the resulting product being carried away from the pot via a cyclone separation system where the heavier products are separated and returned to the pot as a dross which is maintained in the pot at all times. The stream of air is introduced into the lower portion of the pot, i.e. just above the stirrer where the majority of the dross is located. The litharge product is of fine particle size, for example 5 microns, having a high acid absorption value (between 160 and 180 as defined in the Specification), low apparent density (20 to 25 grams per cubic inch), and low content of metallic lead (below 4%, preferably below 2%, by weight). The litharge may be produced in apparatus, see Fig. 1, comprising a Barton pot 10 which is similar to that pot disclosed in Specification 501,175, but which is modified by having the air inlet pipe 16 extending into the lower portion of the pot. The apparatus is generally similar to that disclosed in Specification 966,925, but is modified by having the elongated uptake 17 communicating and co-operating with a cyclone separator 18, desirable size particles being passed via duct 17a to the settling chamber 19, larger and heavier particles being passed from the lower end of the cyclone separator by rotary feeder 41 either via screw conveyer 42, return tube 43 and the air inlet pipe to the pot or via rotary feeder 44 and screw conveyer 45 to the settling chamber. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 966,925.
