Abstract
1,069,166. Yam clearing apparatus; counting and recording. FLIGHT REFUELLING Ltd. Oct. 20, 1965 [Oct. 21, 1964], No. 42929/ 64. Headings D1F and D1J. Changes in the diameter or thickness of textile yarns are determined by causing such changes to deflect a pivoted feeler, such deflections being used to change the intensity of a magnetic field to which a magnetically operative reed switch is responsive. In Fig. 5 the running yarn 4 passes between a ceramic reference plate 1 and an arm 11 pivoted at 12, the arm 11 carrying a ferrous vane 13 normally arranged to lie intermediate a permanent magnet 14 and a magnetically operable reed-type switch 15. When the thickness of the yarn increases, or a slub occurs, the upper end of the arm tends to follow the running yarn 4 and the vane 13 is then displaced to allow the permanent magnet 14 to operate the switch 15 and so close the energising circuit of a solenoid operating a yarn cutter. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the pivoted arm 34 carries two permanent annular magnets 32, 33 within each of which is located a magnetically actuated reed switch 35, 36, the whole being so arranged that if the yarn exceeds a predetermined diameter the arm 34 pivots in one direction in a manner causing magnet 32 to operate reed switch 35 and if the diameter of the yarn is less than said predetermined diameter the arm 34 pivots in the opposite direction in a manner causing magnet 33 to operate reed switch 36. The switches preferably operate a cutter. Each embodiment includes a control knob enabling the operator to pre-set the detector to operate in accordance with a predetermined cotton count. The reed switches are hermetically sealed and counting or recording means may be included to indicate the number or frequency of slubs in the yarn. The cutter mechanism may cut the yarn on both sides of a slub to remove the fault entirely from the yarn and may be associated with a yarn joining mechanism.
