Abstract

1,068,834. Vehicle bumpers. WILMOT BREEDEN Ltd. March 31, 1964 [March 29, 1963], No. 12482/63. Heading B7J. A vehicle bumper comprises a hollow tubular shell 14, Fig. 1, of rubber or like resilient material and of substantially constant thickness, the shell having upper and lower lips 15, 15a on the base 14b of the shell sealingly engageable with the vehicle body 17, and a filling 16 of foamed rubber or flexible synthetic resin in the shell. The base 14b is secured to the body by adhesive. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the base part 14b is split for the insertion of a mounting plate 18 in the shell, the plate and the split base being secured to the body by screws 19. In further embodiments described with reference to Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown), the bumper shell is only partially filled or has no filling at all. End fittings may be secured to the ends of the bumper by spigot connections as described with reference to Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). According to further embodiments the bumpers for the front and rear of a vehicle may form enclosed paths. The front bumper encloses the radiator grille and headlamps whilst the rear bumper embraces and resiliently mounts the tail lights.
