Abstract

A winding arm 6 wraps an insulated wire 8 around a half-ring core 1 whilst the core is displaced about its radial axis, the movement of the core 1 being effected by a cam 14 that causes the core to move slowly in one direction during a wire winding period and to move rapidly back to its starting position during a non-winding period. The inclined faces of the cam 17 are used to move the core 1 at a desired rate during a winding period and the radial faces of the cam 17 permit a spring 23 to pull the core rapidly back to its starting position. Just prior to the cam follower 15 reaching the end of an inclined cam face a further cam 17 contacts an electric switch 18 to change a gear setting 24 in a manner reducing the winding speed of the arm 6 to about one ninth of normal. At the same time an electromagnet 28 causes the cam follower 15 to be locked in order, as the cam 14 rotates further, to prevent the jumping of the cam follower 15 into the recess in the cam 14 until such time as the winding arm 6 has turned below the horizontal on the outside of the core 1. When the winding arm 6 has turned below the horizontal a pair of slide contacts 33 are bridged by a metal insert on a winding disc 5 carrying the winding arm 6 and this releases the electromagnet 28 so that the cam follower 15 can jump into a recess in the cam 14. In this manner the cam follower 15 is prevented from jumping into a recess immediately it reaches the end of an inclined surface of the cam 14 and in this way any difference due to manufacture and shaping and to end wear of the cam 14 are eliminated and cannot influence the start of the carrying back of the wire. A hook 21 holds the wire in position at one end of the core 1 whilst the core moves back to its starting position and during this period a wire-reversing wedge 21 is pressed by a leafspring 36 against the coil. The apparatus is stated to be suitable for winding multi-layer deflecting coils on a ferrite core.
