Abstract

A method of manufacturing prosthetic accessories, such as dental plates and implants to replace pieces of fractured skulls, comprises taking an impression (1, Fig. 3) of the part required, preparing a die (5) from the impression, and deforming a sheet metal blank (7, Fig. 2) on to the die by high-energy forming. The stainless steel &c. blank may be shaped by explosion forming, spark-discharge in a liquid such as water, or by an electro-magnetic pulse in air or other medium. The die (5) is formed by supporting the impression (1) on modelling clay &c.. (4) in a ring (2) and brushing the surface of the impression with a coating of epoxy resin which is allowed partially to set before a body or laminate of resin and fibreglass cloth is deposited on the impression. After removing the die, it is inserted in an evacuation chamber (6) and covered by the blank, which is secured against a rubber &c. seal (14) by a clamping ring (15) fixed by bolts. A deformable plug (9) with a rubber insert (18) supports an explosive charge (8) and a detonator (22) in a tube (20) fixed by modelling clay (24). The pressure wave caused by the explosive is transmitted to the blank by the plug (9). As applied to forming by spark discharge (Fig. 5), the apparatus, without the plug (9), is immersed in a tank of liquid (27) in which a shock wave is produced by an electric discharge between electrodes (29) or through a wire (25) between the electrodes. The apparatus, without the plug (9), may be arranged beneath a coil (Fig. 6) through which capacitors are discharged for electromagnetic forming.
