Abstract

Phthalic anhydride is produced by the vapour phase partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon precursor, and the mixture produced is quenched with a methyl naphthalene to give a slurry of the anhydride in methyl naphthalene, from which the anhydride is recovered. The hydrocarbon precursor may be o-xylene, naphthalene or methyl naphthalene. The quench medium separated from the anhydride may be recirculated to form part of the feed mixture to be oxidized. The off gases from the quench treatment are scrubbed with water to recover maleic acid, maleic anhydride and fumaric acid.
