Abstract

Citraconic acid anhydride is recovered from water used to wash the waste gases following alkylaromatic oxidation, by first converting maleic acid to fumaric acid and separating, then structurally rearranging the citraconic acid, concentrating by distillation at below 80 degrees C (to eliminate 80-90% water), vacuum distilling the remaining solution at above 80 degrees C pref above 100 degrees C, then separating the acid anhydride and recovering in pure form by raffination or rectification.
