Abstract

Meta- and para-nitrobenzoic acids are prepared by oxidizing a mixture of isomers of aromatic compounds having both a -NO2 group and a single group incorporating oxygen or halogen oxidizable to a -COOH group attached to the ring in the m- or p-position with respect to the -NO2 group, with diluted nitric acid to a mixture of isomeric nitrobenzoic acids and fractionally crystallizing the mixture of acids or salts thereof. The preferred crystallization procedure is based on the low solubility of p-nitrobenzoic acid in aqueous isopropanol and the low solubility of calcium m-nitro-benzoate in water. In examples the following starting materials are used: nitro derivatives of phenylmethyl carbinol, alphachloroethyl-benzene or acetophenone, nitric esters of nitrophenylmethyl carbinols and mixed nitro compounds obtained as a by-product in the preparation of p-nitroacetophenone.
