Abstract

1,068,259. Cooling towers. FOSTER WHEELER CORPORATION. Nov. 2, 1964 [Oct. 31, 1963], No. 44540/64. Heading F4K. A cross-flow cooling tower has a circular or rectangular housing 12, formed of frame members 15 and 16, with inlet and exhaust sides 24 and 28 for the horizontal air flow, and a basin 36 for distributing the downwardly flowing water, the housing being filled by support members 32 and slats 34 disposed transversely to the air flow; a horizontal interchange deck 42 separates an upper reach of the housing from a lower reach, the deck conveying water from the air inlet side of the upper reach to the exhaust side of the lower reach and vice versa. This deck comprises a series of troughs 54 (see Fig. 4), aligned with the direction of air flow and formed by a horizontal plate 44 and vertical walls 48. Alternate troughs are covered over half their length by roofs 50 (Figs. 3 and 4) at the air inlet side of the housing, the intermediate troughs being half-covered at their other ends, i.e. at the air exhaust side of the housing. Water flowing down the inlet side of the upper reach flows into troughs 54 either directly or off the roofs 50 and is transported to the other, i.e. covered end of these troughs, to be distributed to the exhaust side of the lower reach through nozzles 56. The cooling air is sucked through the housing by a fan 21 housed in stack 20 and on leaving the exhaust side passes through drift eliminators 26 into a centre chimney 18.
