[Also in Group XIII] A cross-flow water-cooling tower has a casing 10 with opposed vertical side walls 12, 14 and open ends for entry of air throughout their entire area, an opening 22 for exit of air, a fill assembly spanning the walls 12, 14 and including a number of sections 32a, 32b having horizontally offset portions, an open top basin 42 for discharging water on to the section 32a and an open top basin 48 for transferring water from the lower end of the section 32a to the upper end of the section 32b. A fan 26 driven by a belt 30 from a prime mover 28 draws the air through the fill assembly and louvres 54 at the open ends of the casing while the water gravitates through nozzles 44 from the basin 42 on to diffusion decks 46 which may also be provided beneath the basin 48. Each section 32a, 32b consists of a number of horizontal slats 36 arranged so that the water must take a serpentine path on its way to a sump 38 provided with one or more overflows 40. Splash eliminators 56 and drift eliminators 58 may be provided as shown. Alternatively, a single drift eliminator may be provided for the fill assembly or for each of its sections. The upper end of the section 32b may not be directly beneath the lower end of the section 32a or even overlap it and the end faces of the sections which may be of different dimensions, may be vertical instead of inclined.
