Abstract

1,068,170. Rotary-piston machines. AERO-COMMERCE G. m. b. H. Dec. 30, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1963], No. 51243/63. Heading F1F. [Also in Division F2] A rotary-piston engine of the intermittentabutment type comprises a stationary cylindrical housing (1), Figs. 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 (not shown), containing two rotors mounted on coaxial rotatable shafts (7, 8) respectively, which are connected to a common output shaft (19) by oval gear-wheels (9, 10) meshing with a pair of eccentric circular gear-wheels (11, 12) so that the shaft (19) rotates with a uniform angular velocity while the rotors rotate in one direction with varying angular velocities. Each of the rotors carries a pair of diametrally-opposed pistons (2, 2' or 3, 3') whereby the interior of the housing is divided into four working spaces (a--d) whose volumes vary as the rotors rotate. The gear-wheels (11, 12) are fixed on the shaft (19) with their points of maximum eccentricity displaced by 180‹ from each other, the eccentricity e, Fig. 7 (not shown), of each wheel being equal to half the radius r 2 of the pitch circle. The semi-minor axis b' and the semi-major axis a<SP>1</SP> of the pitch curve of each of the wheels (9, 10) is equal to 1À5r 2 and 2À5r 2 , respectively, whereby, the gear-ratio is 2:1. It is stated that the configuration of the pitch-curve of each of the oval gear-wheels (9, 10) is not perfectly elliptic. The engine may be adapted to operate as an I. C. engine having exhaust and inlet ports (4, 5) in the housing (1) and a spark-plug 6, which periodically lies in register with each of the working spaces (a--d) in turn when the rotors rotate. Alternatively, the engine may be adapted to serve as a vacuum pump, a pressure pump or a motor actuated by e.g. compressed air, steam or oil, inlet and outlet ports or orifices (indicated in Fig. 2 by broken lines) being provided in an end wall of the casing so that they are controlled by the pistons. The radially outermost peripheralsurface of each piston subtends an angle α at the axis of rotation not exceeding 41À5‹.
