Abstract

A water-insoluble polysulphonic acid containing recurring units having the structural formula <FORM:1068019/C3/1> is obtained by reacting a homo- or copolymer of acrolein with hydrogen sulphide in a medium having a pH of from 1 to 5 and oxidizing said reaction product at a temperature of from 20 DEG to 100 DEG C. to form the polysulphonic acid. The reaction product may be modified before oxidation e.g. by reaction with formaldehyde. Vinyl ethyl ether is exemplified as a co-monomer.
