Abstract

Silver, mercury, copper or gold salts are alkylated, arylated, alkenylated or reduced with an organo-trifluorosilane preferably in the presence of an acid, particularly hydrofluoric acid. Other organo-silanes may be used in the presence of hydrofluoric acid if they are convertible to organo-trifluorosilanes. The organotrifluorosilane may be added dropwise, or passed as a gas, into a solution of the salt in an organic solvent, alcohol being present if required to aid solubility. In the case of mercury salts, where HF is present, ammonium chloride is added to dissolve by-product mercury fluoride. Examples describe the preparation of (1) phenylmercuric chloride from mercuric chloride and phenyltrichlorosilane in the presence of HF, (7) methylmercuric chloride from mercuric chloride and methyl trifluorosilane and (8) a silver mirror from silver nitrate and methyl trifluorosilane in water acidified with HF, or, in alcohol solution a black precipitate of finely divided silver.ALSO:A silver mirror is produced by passing mernyltrifluorosilane into an aqueous solution of silver nitrate acidified with hydrofluoric acid. In alcoholic solution, the silver separates as a finely-divided black precipitate.
