Abstract

A sizing composition for paper is prepared by reacting at 150-250 DEG C. 3.5-10% of an a ,b -unsaturated polybasic acid or anhydride with a petroleum resin resulting from the copolymerization in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst of two liquid hydrocarbon fractions produced in the refining or cracking of petroleum crude oil, one such fraction comprising C5 diolefines of b.p. 20-100 DEG C. and the other fraction comprising styrene and/or its derivatives and of b.p. 140-280 DEG C., the petroleum resin having a softening point (Ball and Ring method) of 40-100 DEG C. and bromine number of 30-70, and then saponifying the resin with alkali to produce an aq. dispersion having an average particle diameter of less than 1000 A.U. The poly basic acid or anhydride may be maleic anhydride or it may be derived from a polybasic acid which is capable of forming, when heated, an a ,b -unsaturated polybasic acid, e.g. citric acid which is used in an amount by weight of twice that of the unsaturated acid. The reacted petroleum resin, prior to its saponification, may be blended with rosin or its derivative, an unsaturated fatty acid or tall oil. The alkali used for saponification may be potassium hydroxide. The treated resin may be compounded with alum, starch and/or an alkyl ketene dimer emulsion.ALSO:A sizing composition for paper is prepared by reacting at 150-250 DEG C 3.5-10% of an a , b unsaturated polybasic acid or anhydride with a petroleum resin resulting from the copolymerization in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst of two liquid hydrocarbon fractions produced in the refining or cracking of pertoleum crude oil, one such fraction comprising C5 diolefines of b.p. 20-100 DEG C. and the other fraction comprising styrene and/or its derivatives and of b.p. 140-280 DEG C., the petroleum resin having a softening point (Ball and Ring method) of 40-100 DEG C. and bromine number of 30-70, and then saponifying the resin with alkali to produce an ag. dispersion having an average particle diameter of less than 1,000 A.U. A surface sizing methol comprises applying 1-5% of alum to pulp slurry, making the pulp into a web of paper and applying to the surface of the paper the above sizing composition.
