Abstract

Oils and fats are continuously hydrogenated by a process in which dispersed catalyst is added to oil to be treated and the oil-catalyst mixture is passed successively over a plurality of perforated plates arranged on top of each other in a column, the mixture travelling across each plate along a path defined by partitions, hydrogen being circulated in excess upwardly through the column by means of the perforations in the plates, optionally in admixture with an inert gas, to maintain the oil on the plates. Used catalyst suspended in oil is usually added to the oil supplied to the uppermost plate, and fresh catalyst suspended in oil may be added to the oil at a subsequent plate. The hydrogen is supplied from an electrolytic cell and is recircled after use, the amount of fresh hydrogen needed to add to that recircled in order to provide a constant pressure in the column being produced as necessary and determined by control means, so that no hydrogen storage facilities are needed. Both fresh and recircled hydrogen are dried, and the reaction heat may be removed by cooling pipes fitted round the outside of the column.
