Abstract

1,066,624. Coating plastics in sheets. S. A. BAKER (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Aug. 20, 1965 [June 26, 1964], No. 26441/64. Heading B5A. Plastics material, e.g. thermoplastics, is cast in sheets in a machine comprising a generally cylindrical moulding member (15, Fig. 1, not shown) having an outer recessed cylindrical moulding surface (18, Fig. 2, not shown) with unrecessed edge portions (16), a continuous belt (29) which over part of its path co-operates with the moulding member, defining a mould space between itself and recessed portions thereof, feed means for the liquid or paste-like material and drive means (31) to drive the belt and rotate the moulding member at equal speeds. The moulding surface (18) may be built up from a plurality of plates. There may be heating means comprising a tank (11) of hot liquid in which the lower part of the mould is immersed, and may also include a burner or radiant heater disposed within the cylinder above the liquid. Quenching means, e.g. a water spray within the cylinder, may be included to cool the material immediately prior to delivery. The feed means may be a hopper having a lower side surface abutting the unrecessed portions and extending across the width of the moulding member. The belt may be of metal foil or be plastics slats, and there may be means, e.g. an air knife, to remove moulded material and means to remove unwanted substances from the belt.
