Abstract

1375930 Hot melt adhesives H B FULLER CO 20 Dec 1972 58682/72 Heading B5A Apparatus for producing segments 98 of hot melt adhesive, e.g. polyester, polyamide, wax or animal glue, comprises a guide trough 70, (175, Figs. 8, 9), for receiving one or more streams of liquid material 45, cooling medium, e.g. water, for producing a skin on the material whilst in the guide, a cutter located downstream of the guide for pinching and cutting the partially solidified stream 45 to form segments comprising a solid envelope having pinched ends and a molten interior, and a conveyer for collecting the segments. A heated pump may pump the liquid material from a reservoir through a valve 35 and an extrusion orifice 40 to form a stream. The cooling medium may be provided by a water-bath 20 and/or spray jets 100, 102 (180, 182, Fig. 8). The cutter may comprise a rotating drain 80 provided with knives 75 that co-operate with a metal backing roller 85 provided with a plastics cushioning pads 90 or layer (131, Fig. 4). The conveyer may comprise a paddle-wheel 120 feeding a take-off conveyer 123 or a chain conveyer provided with mesh buckets and feeding an air blower (335) which dries and conveys the segments to a plate valve (352) controlling the delivery of the segments into boxes. Further cooling of the segments, even complete solidification may be obtained by allowing the segments to remain in the bath the appropriate time before collection by the paddle-wheel 120 and/or auxiliary paddle-wheels (140, 150, Fig. 4). Alternatively, further cooling may be obtained by employing a paddle-wheel (280) to feed the segments along a ziz-zag water course formed by vertically spaced apart trays (240-242). The cooling medium is recirculated and chilled by a refrigerator. The segments may be pillow-shaped (Figs. 5-7).
