Abstract
1,066,540. Diffusion pumps. BALZERS PATENT-UND LIZENZ-ANSTALT. March 1, 1966 [March 15, 1965], No.8816/66. Heading F1E. In a diffusion pump having a discharge nozzle 38, Fig. 2 surrounded by and spaced from a cooled cap 46, flow paths 56 e. g. in foraminous material or slots, are formed in the skirt wall 42 whereby the interior wall of the skirt 44 is connected with space 55. The slow moving vapour passing through the skirt wall to be condensed on the cap prevents, by means of a boundary layer control effect, slower moving vapour near the skirt wall from being caused to back stream by faster moving vapour nearer the centre of the jet. The cold cap is joined to wires 54 to direct condensed vapour towards the casing walls. The boundary layer control can be applied to all of the pump nozzles.
