Abstract

A last of foamed polyurethane having a hard and smooth surface is made by casting in a mould. The mould may comprise two parts of thermoplastic sheet material with different shrink properties e.g. one part of low-density polyethylene and the other of high-density polyethylene or one part may be of polypropylene. The sheet material may be vacuum formed to define mould cavity linings for moulds of a settable material e.g. an epoxy resin, plaster of paris. In another example the mould is formed by taking a wooden core spraying it with a polyurethane mixture which sets hard and smooth and then locating the coated core in a box which is filled with a polyurethane reactant mixture. To form the last the inner surface of the mould may be sprayed with a mixture which reacts to form a lining of a hard polyurethane which lining is filled with a polyurethane foam of lower density. The hard smooth surface may be caused by differential cooling between the surface and interior of the body.
