Abstract
A composite filament is characterized by a longitudinally extending core component consisting of a first synthetic organic polymeric material and a plurality of longitudinally extending lobe components having a denier of from 0.05 to 0.5 surrounding and adherent to the core component, at least part of the lobe components consisting of a second synthetic organic polymeric material ad being "readily separable" from the remainder of the composite filament, said core component having a higher denier than any of the lobe components. The denier of the core component may be from 1 to 4. The first and second polymeric materials may be respectively a polyamide and a polyester or vice versa. The core and lobe components may contain at least 2% by weight of an antistatic agent consisting of a poly (alkylene ether) with a molecular weight of 1,300 to 200,000. The term "readily separable" is defined as the tendency for the lobe components consisting of the second polymeric material to separate from the remainder of the composite filament to form separate independent component filaments when the composite filament is subjected to a treatment such as vigorous mechanical agitation while it is immersed in boiling water. The composite filaments of the invention may be formed by melt spinning through spinneret orofices of cruciform cross-section and draw-twisted into yarns. A knitted, woven or "non-woven" fabric may be formed of the composite filaments or yarns thereof and treated as above to cause their components to separate so that the fabric or yarn thereby becomes bulked.
