Abstract
Fire protective coating compositions comprise organic film-forming resin binders and radiation emitters which are stable up to 2000 DEG C. or substances which form such emitters at elevated temperatures, said emitters being substances which transform and radiate thermal energy at wavelengths substantially outside the infra-red range. Specified binders are polyvinyl acetate, vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymers, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, benzyl cellulose, acetyl cellulose, polyurethanes, urea and melamine resins, and chlorinated rubber. Specified radiation emitters are zirconium compounds, thorium compounds and cerite earths, e.g. zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate and mixtures of thorium oxide and cerium oxide. The compositions may also comprise plasticizers, e.g. chlorinated naphthalenes and chlorinated diphenyls; ignition-hindering substances, e.g. amidosulphonic acid and amidophosphoric acid; phenolic resin resoles; and substances which decompose on heating to form gases and carbon. Examples describe compositions comprising (1) a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, titanium dioxide, zirconium oxide and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; (2) a vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer, cadmium yellow, zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; (3) a solution of a melamine resin in butanol, molybdate red or chrome green, zirconium oxide and amidosulphonic acid; and (4) polyvinyl acetate, a phenolic resin resole, a silicone resin powder, ammonium monophosphate, dicyandiamide, pentaerythritol, starch, quartz powder, titanium dioxide, zirconium silicate, lead borate and water.ALSO:Articles are protected from combustion by coating firstly with a conventional fire-retarding paint and secondly with a fire-protective coating composition comprising an organic film-forming material and a radiation emitter stable at temperatures up to 2000 DEG C., or a substance which forms such a radiation emitter at elevated temperature, said radiation emitter being a substance which at temperatures above 600 DEG C transforms and radiates thermal energy substantially outside the infra red range. Articles protected by the process may be of iron or steel. Specified film-forming materials are polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, benzyl cellulose, acetyl cellulose, polyurethanes, urea and melamine resins, and chlorinated rubber. Specified radiation emitters are zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate and mixtures of thorium oxide and cerium oxide. The compositions may also comprise plasticisers, e.g. chlorinated naphthalenes and chlorinated diphenyls; ignition hindering substances, e.g. amido sulphonic acid and amido phosphoric acid; phenolic resoles; and substances which decompose on heating to form gases and carbon. In examples articles are provided with undercoats of conventional fire-retarding paints and topcoats of compositions comprising (1) a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, titanium dioxide, zirconium oxide and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; (2) a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, cadmium yellow, zirconium oxide, zirconium silicate and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; (3) a solution of a melamine resin in butanol, molybdate red or chrome green, zirconium oxide and amido sulphonic acid; and (4) polyvinyl acetate, a phenolic resin resole, a silicone resin powder, ammonium monophosphate, dicyandiamide, pentaerythritol, starch, quartz powder, titanium dioxide, zirconium silicate, lead borate and water.
