Abstract

1,065,465. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 8, 1965 [Nov. 5, 1964], No. 42856/65. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises fuel pencils of circular cross-section disposed in parallel relationship to one another, each pencil being enclosed within a can and all of the canned pencils being within a protective jacket, the cans abutting one another and peripheral cans abutting the inner wall of the protective jacket to maintain the parallel relationship of the pencils, a grid provided adjacent one end of the cans to restrain the cans against axial movement, and ducts of circular cross-section between the cans for the flow of a coolant, the ducts being formed by parts of the outer contours of adjacent cans. The can of each fuel pencil is of Zr, Be or Mg and has a polygonal profile in cross-section, some of the sides of the polygon being concave so as to form the circular ducts. The outer annular protective jacket may be of Zr. The ducts have a helical groove formed in their surface so as to impart a gyratory movement to the flow of coolant. The fuel pencils are supported at their lower ends within the outer annular protective jacket by means of an end grid comprising bearing collars each of which surrounds a fuel pencil can. The lower end of each can may be of smaller external dimensions than the main body of the can. The outer dimensions of each bearing collar are such that the collar does not project beyond the root of the helical groove.
