Abstract

1,065,163. Wells &c. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 10, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963], No. 45729/64. Heading E1F. An oil-bearing formation penetrated by a well is consolidated by injecting from the well at a temperature of 93‹ - 260‹C a mixture of steam, condensed steam, and air for a period adequate to convert oil in the formation to coke bonding the particles of the formation into a strong permeable mass. The mixture is injected for at least 8 hours, and the initial temperature of injection may be less than 93 ‹C. The injection of the mixture may be followed by an injection of steam to make the well produce. Where the formation contains no oil fraction suitable for coking, a heavy, readily cokable, oil is injected into the formation prior to the injection of the mixture.
