Abstract

1,064,940. Calculating machines. ING. C. OLIVETTI & C., S.p.A. Oct. 20, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963], No. 42660/64; Heading G4B. A .calculating machine is provided with a zero printing control device in which a member moves from right to left and senses the print actuators. The invention is applied to a tenkey calculating machine similar to that described in Specification 1,065,019 which is referred to. There is a typewheel 42 provided for each order and each is positioned by a rack 69 movable by, a three-armed lever 70 which is positioned by a rack 8. The racks 8 may be positioned by sectors 5 on the movable carriage of the machine or by the totalizer 9. The type wheels 42 are mounted on a number of slides 44 spring-urged against a bar 49 which is controlled by a cam 60 on the main machine shaft through a linkage 57, 56, 63, 51. The slides are held by-projections 67 engaging a transverse arm 66 on a bail 63 and are freed during the final movement of the linkage by a pin 55 engaging a projection 61. A decimal point printing mechanism 97 is slidable on a bar 100 and is operated by movement of, a slide 102. When in the extreme right-hand position it is prevented from printing by fixed ;pin 104. If a number has been set up on the sectors 5 of the carriage 1 and is to be accumulated into the totalizer 9, the carriage will, be brought into the correct relative position, after the appropriate key has been depressed, moving with it a slide 29. This carries a pin. 113 which engages a projection 111 on a further slide 108 spring-urged against it and which has a bent edge 114 adapted to engage projections 116 on the type-carrying slides 44. The edge 114 is thus located against those of the slides 44 which are to the left of the highest order set up on the carriage 1, and so those zeros are not printed. If a total is being taken from the totalizer 9 an appropriate key is depressed and the racks 8 are moved backwards, each until its corresponding totalizer wheel is zeroized, thus rotating the typewheels 42 according to the total. Each lever 70 used for positioning the typewheels 42 has an arcuate portion 91 which will move underneath a plate 87, pivotally mounted on the slide 29, once the corresponding typewheel has been displaced from the zero position. During the totaltaking operation the carriage 1 and the slide 29 move from right to left, the plate 87 riding over the portions 91 of the levers 70 until it reaches a position in which all the levers under the plate are in the zero position. The plate then pivots anticlockwise and a toothed edge 92 on it engages a similar edge 93 on slide 36 which can move only a short distance. This immediately abuts a lever which operates to disengage the clutch driving the carriage 1. Thus the carriage is correctlypositioned for total taking and the non significant zeros are prevented from being printed by the edge 114 on the slide 108 which has been moved with the slide 29. If the decimal point mechanism has been located to the left of the' highest order non-zero the slide 108 is moved this position by the decimal point slide 97 which abuts it, thus allowing the decimal point to be printed and all zeros to the right of it. If desired the control of printing may be effected by a member engaging the lever 57;to prevent its being rotated counter-clockwise.
