Abstract

1,064,797. Mass separators. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTONHOTCHKISS BRANDT. July 8, 1964 [July 8, 1963], No. 28178/64. Heading HID. In a mass separator arrangement particles are charged in an ion source 1, are velocitymodulated in a grid system 6-11, are separated into faster and slower moving groups of particles in a drift tube 10 and are then acted upon by transverse alternating electric fields set up by pairs of plates 17 to 20 (which may be interconnected by delay line systems) so that the groups of particles are diverged into separate collectors 24, 25. Buncher cavities 13, 14, or alternatively pairs of grids, may be provided to increase the forward separation while a cavity 15 may be provided to act in the reverse sense so as to equalize the velocities of the groups of particles before they enter the deflecting zone 16. A D.C. field may be provided parallel to the particle path and focusing fields may also be present.
