Abstract

An apparatus for compressing loose material such as crops or fibres, for example hay, comprises a plurality of substantially parallel rotating rollers defining a core-forming chamber, an adjacent pair of the rollers being so spaced as to provide a feed opening into the chamber, means for rotating all the rollers in the same directtion, and a discharge opening for the formed compressed core at least one end of the chamber. Cutting means to cut the discharged core into pellets may be provided. The rollers may be slightly stepped or conical to assist in discharging the core, or a short-stroke reciprocating pusher may be provided. To assist in winding the hay &c. in the chamber, a frusto-conical member having a roughened surface and rotating in the opposite sense to the rollers, may protrude into the chamber at one end. The apparatus may be mounted on a trailer so as to pellet the material as it is picked up in the field, being fed to the chamber by means of a conveyer.
