Abstract

A gas anchor for separating gas and liquid in for example oil wells consists of a column of substantially equidistant cups which may be various shapes including cylindrical and frustoconical, positioned with their open ends upwards, fitting on a central pipe, provided with conduits leading from the interior of the central pipe to the lower parts of the cups. The conduits, which may be of various lengths depending on the pressure drop required, may be coiled so as to form the walls of the cups. In use the central pipe leads to the pump which which sends the oil up the producer tube to the surface. Oil from the oil-bearing strata flows over the edges of the cups and then via the conduits to the central pipe. Bubbles of gas are disengaged during passage into the cups and rise up between the producer tube and the casing to the surface.
