Abstract

1,064,118. Recording &c. apparatus using electron beams. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Sept. 3, 1963 [Sept. 4, 1962], No. 34732/63. Heading G5R. [Also in Division H1] In an information storage device, an electron beam is controlled in accordance with information to be stored to form apertures in a record member in a pattern representative of said information and means are provided, responsive to the passage of the beam through the apertures, for reading the stored information. The record member may comprise a tape 12 of aluminium, 1 mil. thick, with or without a surface coating of thermoplastic material, ¢ mil. thick, the electron beam being used to evaporate the material of the tape to form apertures through the tape or in the surface coating. As shown, the tape passes over conductive roller 16, and insulating sprocket 18, the teeth of which coact with slots in the edge of the tape, and which drives an X-position transducer 19. An X-position command 26 and the output of transducer 19 are differentially combined in a comparator circuit 28, the output of which is fed to the tape drive mechanism 22 and the X-deflection input of tube 10, and is also coupled to a hysteresis circuit 30 which prevent any signals from being coupled to the intensity input of the tube 10, if the desired X-position of the tape is not within the field of view of the electron beam. During writing, switches 42, 43 are positioned as shown to apply a high voltage V to the tube anode, and to couple input signals to a fixed source Io in adding circuit 48 and thence to tube 10. Information may be digitally stored as discrete holes of varying size, or analogue information may be stored as tracks of varying width. During reading, switches 42, 43 connect a low voltage # to the tube anode and a fixed reduced voltage to the intensity input of the tube to produce a non-destructive read-out beam, the output being obtained from a brush 17 engaged by a slip ring 16a of the conductive roller 16 and/or from the collector electrode 14 which are connected via subtraction circuits 54, 52 to a fixed source E 0 . The voltage sources I 0 , E 0 , V are chosen so that the output is proportional to the input intensity. Holes provided in the margins of tape 12 may be used to calibrate the X and Y deflection circuits, and holes of predetermined different sizes may be provided to calibrate the amplitude sensitive circuits and to adjust voltage sources I 0 , E 0 , V. If the tape comprises a thermoplastic coating on a conductive backing, recorded information may be erased by melting the thermoplastic coating so that a smooth surface reforms.
