Abstract

1,171,828. Cathode-ray storage tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 22 May, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 23660/67. Heading H1D. An information storage system includes a storage target having a porous, highly resistive member of less than 10% bulk density with a conductive layer on one surface; a gun for directing a flooding beam of electrons upon that surface with sufficient energy to penetrate the conductive layer and leave the other surface of the porous member uniformly changed; a scanning gun for directing a beam upon the charged surface of the porous member; an input circuit for modulating the scanning beam with the information to be stored, and an output circuit for deriving an output signal from the storage member under exposure to the scanning beam, and means for connecting either the input or the output circuit to the conductive layer for writing and reading respectively. The target 30 is composed of a porous layer of potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, or magnesium oxide, with a free surface facing the scanning gun 14 and the other surface separated by a conductive layer of aluminium from a supporting layer of aluminium oxide. The target is primed by a high energy pulse-e.g. of a millisecond-from flood gun 50, whereby the free surface of the porous layer is positively charged to a potential determined by the grid 40. Information is then written upon the primed target by the lowenergy scanning gun 14, a modulating signal, corresponding to the information, being applied, via switch 43, either to the control grid 20 or, preferably, to the conductive layer in the target, and is subsequently read out, via switch 43, by scanning with the beam unmodulated. The priming pulses from gun 50 may be arranged to coincide with the return time of the vertical deflection of the scanning gun 14.
