Abstract

Fire-resistant fibreboard is made by preparing a wet layer of wood fibres, applying a suspension of mineral fibres upon the woodfibre layer to form a layer of mineral fibres, and dewatering the composite wet mat through the wood-fibre layer. The fibres of the two kinds are used in such quantity that the thicknesses in the final dried board of the layers of mineral and wood fibres are at least 2.5 and 6 mm. respectively. The wet mat may be pressed at room or elevated temperature, and may then be finally dried in a fan drier or in a heated press. The mineral-fibre layer may be sized, e.g. with starch or a melamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin, or a sizing agent in the form of starch, carboxy-methylcellulose or an emulsion of an alkyd or vinyl resin or acrylate may be sprayed on to the web before or after the press section. Mineral-fibre layers may be applied on both sides of the wood-fibre layer. The mineral fibres may be of mineral wool, asbestos, slag wool or glass wool. The board of the invention will damp sound transmission in buildings. The starch solution used for sizing may contain an emulsion of tall oil. The tall oil is emulsified in water by adding concentrated ammonia and stirring. This emulsion is then added to a solution of starch.
