Abstract

Coating compositions comprise an electrically insulating film-forming material having dispersed therein finely divided silicon dioxide. Specified film-forming materials are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, styrene/butadiene copolymers, vinyl acetate/alkyl acrylate copolymers, polyalkyl acrylate, polyalkyl methacrylates, saturated and unsaturated polyester resins, phenol/formaldehyde resins, xyleneformaldehyde resins, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetobutyrate and silicone resins. The compositions may also contain photoconductive materials, e.g. zinc oxide, and may be prepared by dispersing the silicon dioxide in a solution of the film-forming material. The compositions may be applied to substrates to give layers on which electrostatic images may be produced. Examples describe compositions comprising silicon dioxide, toluene and (1) a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer and trichlorethylene; (2) silicone varnish; and silicone varnish, ethyl acetate and (3) a vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate copolymer, (5) polyvinyl acetate or (6) styrenated alkyd resin.
