Abstract

1,088,190. Photoconductive layer. MEAD CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1964, No. 51800/64. Heading H1K. A photoconductive layer comprises a photoconductive pigment and an electrically insulating binder comprising a water or alkali insoluble copolymer or terpolymer of styrene, butadiene, vinyl acetate, acrylic esters, acrylonitrile or a polyester with an unsaturated carboxylic acid. The unsaturated carboxylic acid may be acrylic, maleic, crotonic, aconitic, itaconic, or citraconic. The photoconductive pigment may be an oxide, iodide, sulphide or telluride of Zn, Cd, Sb, Hg, Bi, Ti, Tl, Pb, A1, Ag or As. A support for such a layer may be metal, glass, textile or plastics material, whilst multiple layers may be applied to the support on one or both sides of the support. In a specific example a binder composition comprising styreneacrylic acid copolymer latex, ammonia and water is mixed with a pigment dispersion comprising ZnO, dewaxed shellac, ammonia and water to give a coating composition, which was subsequently applied to a precoated base stock. Preferably volatile alkalis, e.g. NH 3 are used to neutralize the weakly acidic groups in the resin.
