Abstract
The invention comprises compositions comprising a double metal cyanide complex compound, wherein the first metal is capable of forming a stronger metal-oxygen bond than the co-ordinate bond it forms with the CN nitrogen atom and wherein the second metal (which may be the same as the first) is a transition metal having more than one stable valence form and forms a relatively strong covalent bond with the CN carbon atom, and wherein at least the majority of the bridging groups between said first and second metals are CN-groups, said complex compound containing, in an amount sufficient to increase the activity of said complex for the polymerization of oxirans and oxetans, at least one organic material selected from alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, ethers, amides, nitriles and sulphides. The compositions are made by treating the complex cyanides with the organic materials or a mixture of water and organic material and may have the rational formula <FORM:1063526/C2/1> where M is Zn (II), Fe (II), Fe (III), Co. (II), Ni (II), Mo (IV), Mo (VI), Al (III), V (IV), V (V), Sr (II), W (IV), W (VI), Mn (II), or Cr (III); M1 is Fe (II), Fe (III), Co (II), Co (III), Cr (II), Cr (III), Mn (II), Mn (III), V (IV) or V (V); X is F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, OH-, NO, O2-, CO, H2O, NO2-, C2O42-, SO42-, CNO-, CNS-, NCO- or NCS-; R is the organic material; a and c are numbers, r is a number greater than , t is a number or zero and the values of a, c, r and t are such that the valences and co-ordination numbers of M and M1 are satisfied, the total net positive charge on M times a being equal to the total net positive charge or (M1(CN)r(X)t times c; d is zero or a number and e is a number. The compositions may be polymeric in form and may be dried in vacuo or in a stream of gas up to 200 DEG C., or azeotropically.ALSO:Double metal complex cyanides are prepared as follows: Examples (1), (2) (13) and (14), Zn3[Fe(CN)6]2 by reacting ZnCl2, ZnBr2, Zn(C2H3O2)2 or Zn(NO3)2 with K3Fe(CN)6, a mixture of K3Fe(CN)6 and K4Fe(CN)6 or CaFe(CN)6; Example (7), iron hexacyano-ferrate by reacting FeCl3 with K4Fe(CN)6; Example (9), ZnFe(CN)5NO from ZnCl2 and Na2Fe(CN)5NO; Examples (10), (12) and (15), Zn3[Co(CN)6]2 from ZnCl2 and K3Co(CN)6, Ca3[Co(CN)6]2, Na3Co(CN)6 or Li3Co(CN)6; Example (11) Ni3[Fe(CN)6]2, aqueous media being used in each case.
