Abstract
<PICT:1063406/C6-C7/1> An anode for use in an impressed current cathodic protection system for metal structures which are under water (e.g. ship's hulls) or in damp ground comprises an elongated support member 11 of electric insulating material, a rod 10 of electrically conductive material adapted to be connected to an electric power source, a face of the support member 11 being provided with a longitudinal groove (26), Fig. 2 (not shown), into which the rod 10 is cemented in a manner such that parts 12 of the rod at spaced intervals along the length thereof are exposed. A rod, shown beneath the rod 10, serves as a bus-bar for it. Current connection to bus-bars and rods 10 is as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). The rods 10 may be of Ti or Ta over cores of Cu or Al and the exposed parts 12 may be plated or sheathed with Pt, Pd, Pt alloy or Pd alloy. The support member 11 may be of glass reinforced polyester. Rod 10 and their bus-bars may be cemented in grooves (26) by means of heated viscous glass reinforced polyester which is allowed to cool and harden around them in the grooves or by means of gellable material comprising polyvinyl chloride and plasticiser. Additional anchoring may be by pegs 27.
