Abstract

932,710. Anodes for preventing corrosion. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Inc. April 22, 1960 [April 28, 1959], No. 14233/60. Class 123 (1). An anode assembly for a ship's impressed current cathodic protection system comprises a mushroom-shaped electrically insulating support 8, the stem 12 of which, sealed by a packing 34 compressed between a jam nut 32 and a threaded tubular sleeve 30 welded into a bore through the ship's hull 6, has embedded therein an electrical connector pin 14 having a head 24 which is welded to the base of a cup-shaped recess 20 in a circular, corrosion-resistant, anode disc 16 made e.g. of platinum or alloys thereof. An inturned lip 18 on the edge of the disc is embedded in the support 8, the recess 20 being provided with perforations 25 to facilitate a tight bond with the support 8 which is made of a plastics material such as polytetrafluorethylene. The pin 14 fits into a socket 28 connected to the positive terminal of a direct-current power supply 26. Larger anode discs may incorporate several recesses 20.
