Abstract
A display device comprises an electrically non-linear resistance layer (11) and a sheet of piezo-electric material (10, Fig. 1), e.g. a polarized lead titanate-lead zirconate mixture, with sandwiched between them a coupling film (12) with relatively low electrical impedance perpendicular to the piezo-electric sheet and with a low shear modulus of elasticity (e.g. glycol, or a polysulphide gel with a carbon filler as a film 0.005 inch thick) and an electroluminescent layer (13) on the other surface of the non-linear layer; conductors (15, transparent, and 16) are coupled respectively to the electroluminescent and the piezo-electric layers, and electrodes (e.g. 20, 20a, 22, 22a, arranged as bars on the four sides of a rectangular piezo-electric plate) are adapted to receive an input voltage so that an electric field is propagated in the piezo-electric sheet, a visible light output being produced at the intersection of the fields. The piezo-electric sheet is of greater area than the other layers, and is terminated in a non-reflective absorber, e.g. lead. Conductive metal plates 14, small in area compared to the resolution of the device, may be included to improve the coupling between the non-linear layer 11 and the electroluminescent layer 13.
