Abstract

1,063,091. Purifying exhaust, regulating. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 13, 1964, No. 15282/64. Heading F1B. Exhaust gases are purified by adding air thereto at a point adjacent to the exhaust ports and maintaining a pressure in the exhaust manifold of at least 1À05 times atmospheric pressure. In Fig. 1 the air is supplied by a blower 14 through pipes 14' to points adjacent the exhaust ports, whereby the unburnt products in the exhaust gases are oxidized in the manifold and exhaust pipe 11. A valve 13, which may be a slide valve 31, Fig. 10 (not shown), actuated by the intake manifold vacuum or an eccentric butterfly valve (41), Fig. 11b(not shown), loaded by a spring or weight (43) and actuated by the exhaust gas flow, maintains a predetermined pressure in the exhaust system. A catalytic reactor may be positioned upstream of the valve 13, which reactor may have a by-pass pipe with a valve which opens at a predetermined pressure or temperature. An afterburner chamber may be positioned upstream of the reactor 12.
