Abstract
1,062,688. Tufting machines. SOUTHERN MACHINE CO. Inc. Sept. 14, 1965 [Dec. 29, 1964], No. 39184/65. Heading DIG. In a tufting machine a loop-cutting knife is received in a channel formed in a block, and is held in position by a tiltable insert movable towards and away from the channel to vary the effective width thereof. As shown, knives 78 are received in undercut channels 44, 46 formed in opposed faces of a block 30 secured to an oscillating bar 48. An aperture 60 in block 30 receives an insert 68 formed at its upper and lower edges with grooves 72 loosely engaging pins 70 fixed in block 30. A screw 80 biases insert 68 towards the edges of knives 78 for securing the latter, insert 68 being tiltable on the pins 70 to permit engagement with knives 78 of different width. The upper ends of the knives co-operate with loopers 90 carried by an oscillating bar 88. In a modification the upper and lower edges of the insert have a loose tongue and groove connection with the block. It is stated that the block may have only one channel or more than two channels, when the insert is faced with resilient material to ensure engagement with all the knives.
