Aug. 31, 1965 FIG. 4
United States Patent 3,203,385 THREE WAY GGUDS GUIDE F012 SEWING MACHINES Angelo Micale, 995 Nassau St, North Brunswick, NJ. Filed Oct. 22, 1963, Ser. No. 315,033 4 Claims. ((31. 112-152) This invention relates to a device by which several different pieces of decorative material, of the same or different widths and spacings, may be properly guided for sewing them simultaneously over a base material, channels for the decorative material being provided at several levels or tiers.
The drawings illustrate the invention, and in these:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the device;
FIG. 2 is a side view of FIG. 1 from the left;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a front view of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged section on line 5-5 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 6 is an enlarged section on line 66 of FIG. 1;
FIGS. 7 and 8 are respectively plan and side views of one of the movable spacers of the device;
FIGS. 9 and 10 are respectively plan and side views of a fixed spacer;
FIGS. 11 and 12 are respectively plan and side views of movable spacers used at a different level than those shown in FIGS. 7 and 8.
Referring to the drawings for a detailed description, the numeral 15 indicates an oblong lower plate which has, adjacent its front edge, an elongate slot 16 extending therethrough from its upper to its lower surface. A depressed shoulder 17 is formed around the slot. Secured crosswise to the plate 15 and in contact with its lower surface, and extending forwardly from the plate, is an elongate member 18, which serves in forming one side of a guiding channel forthe decorative material, and also as means whereby the device may be secured to the machine table; for the latter purpose, it has an elongate slot 18A lengthwise thereof and extending therethrough so that it may receive a vertical bolt 1813 anchored in the table, a nut 18C being provided for tightening. The main part of the device may therefore be moved towards or away from the needles. The mem ber 18 is fastened to and under plate 15 by a pair of screws 20 the heads of which, when the screws are tightened, bear against opposite points of the ledge or shoulder 17. When the screws are loosened, the main part of the device may be moved to the right or left relative to the member 18, which constitutes a spacer forming one side of a guiding channel, the other side of the channel being a spacer 25. The latter is disposed crosswise of the plate, and extends for some distance in front thereof, and is held to the bottom of plate 15 by a screw 27 the head of which, when tightened, bears against opposite points of ledge or shoulder 17. When screw 27 is loosened, the guiding spacer may be moved to any position desired within slot 16, the space between the members 18 and 25 being equal to the width of the decorative material to be run between them. Thus there is a guiding channel at a level below plate 15. The spacer 25 has a boss 25A on its upper surface (FIGS. 7 and 8) and it extends up into the slot 16 to be level with the upper surface of shoulder or ledge 17, and has a hole to threadedly engage the screw 27.
To form a second tier of guiding channels, an oblong plate 30 is secured to and over plate 15, and is parallel thereto but is spaced therefrom. The plate 30 is narrower than the plate 15, but the back edges of the plates are aligned, leaving a margin of plate 15 extending in front of plate 30, so that guiding spacers in the second tier of channels do not need to extend in front of plate 15. The two plates 15 and 30 are secured together at their ends by screws 33, with fixed end spacers 34 (FIGS. 1, 9 and 10) holding the plates apart. The upper plate 30 has an elongate vertical slot 35 to receive thumb screws 37, each of which serves to tighten, in a selected position along the groove, a spacer 35 (FIGS. 1, 3, 11 and 12), to form between them a channel of predetermined width for the passage of decorative material to be sewed. These spacers have a boss 40 on their upper faces which extends thorugh the slot 35 to the level of the upper surface of the latter, the heads of the thumb screws bearing down on the processes and on adjacent points of plate 30 when tightened. In this tier, two ad ditional channels are provided by the spaces between the fixed spacers 34 and the movable spacers 39.
The heads of screws 37, being above plate 30 form a channel between them through which decorative material may pass at a third level.
Using the device described, a plurality of strips, of decorative material may be sewed onto a hose material simultaneously.
What is claimed is:
1. A sewing machine attachment, comprising a lower elongate plate, an upper elongate plate above the lower plate and secured thereto and spaced therefrom, each of the plates having a vertical elongate slot lengthwise and extending therethrough from its upper to its lower surface, the slots being offset relative to each other, a pair of lowermost or first-level movable spacers secured to the bot tom of the lower plate and extending forwardly from the lower plate at right angles thereo, said first-level spacers being separately movable along the slot in the lower plate, screws for fastening said spacers at selected positions along the slot of the lower plate, one of said spacers having an elongate vertical slot lengthwise therethrough from its upper to its lower surface to receive a stationary fastener by which it may be adjustably secured to a sewing machine table, whereby the main part of the device may be moved to a desired distance from the needles of a sewing machine, a pair of movable spacers between the lower and upper plates and positioned at right angles to the elongate plates and movable along the slot in the upper plate, thumb screws for fastening the second-level spacers at selected positions along the slot in the upper plate, the heads of said thumb screws being above the upper plate, to form a third level channel.
2. The attachment of claim 1 wherein fixed spacers are interposed between the end portions of the upper and lower plates to separate them, said plates being secured together through said fixed spacers.
3. The attachment of claim 1 wherein the upper plate is narrower than the lower plate, the two plates being so connected that the lower plate extends in front of the upper plate.
4. A sewing machine attachment comprising a lower and an upper plate secured together and spaced in parallel relation, first spacers secured to the bottom surface of the lower plate and at right angles to the latter, and movable along the length of the lower plate, second spacers independent of said first spacers positioned, between the plates and disposed at right angles thereto and movable lengthwise of the plates, means for securing in selected positions the said second spacers, said means e tending above the upper plate to form a guide channel between them.
