i MACHINE -IEOR MAKING SHIRRED .RIBBONS.
Application filed October 10, 1925. Serial No. 61,664.
T0 all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. 'l`1EnnMAN1\r,'
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Making Shirred Ribbons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to aI machine for producing shirred ribbons and particularly that type of ribbon which is provided with a center strip or fiat tape having shirred strips of ribbon on its opposite faces.
The object of this invention'is to provide a machine for sewing together by a single operation the various parts of the strip, that is, the shirred outer faces arid the flat center strip so that quantities of this type of ribbon can be very rapidly and expeditiously turned out. I
With these objects and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, m view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof in which- Figure 1 is, a sideelevation of my improved mechanism;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the .line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure`3 is a perspective view of the guide for the ribbons and tape;
Figure 4 is a plan view of a part of the machine; i"
Figure 5' is a plan view of the presser foot;
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the same on the line 6 6 of Figure 5 looking in the direction of the arrows; y
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line 7--7 of Figure 5 of the arrows; v
Figure 8 is a view of the underside ofthe presser foot; and
Figure 9 is a plan view of a section of the ribbon, a part 'of which is shirred in the manner produced by my machine.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts."
In the preferred embodiment my invention, 1 indicates the head of the sewing machine, 2 indicates the presser foot holder looking in the .direction and '3 the needle holder. The yneedles,4,-are carried 1n a block 5 and a pair of needles'are used, the same being spaced apart theI correct distance so that they apply spaced lines of stitching Ias will be hereinafter pointed out.
The presser foot is indicated at Gand the same is capable of universal adjustment, it being adjustable sideways by moans of the bolt 7 and it is adjustable backward and forward by means of the screw 8. The presser foot 6 consists of a central plate 9 having a toe portion 10 which is slotted at 11 and 12 so that the needle holes 13 in the plate 9 are uncovered and free to permit the passage of the needles therethrough. The
'It will be noted that the toe portion 10 is provided with a rounded front edge 16, a central groove 17 and spaced faces 18 lying on vopposite sides of thel groove 17. At 19 is the bed of the machine and this is provided with a removable plate 20, said plate having a plurality of slots 21 through which grippers 22 are movable. The apertures 21 in the plate 2O are located directly below the presser foot sothat the grippers 22 may move upward through said apertures 21 and gather the material to be shirred as will be hereinafter pointed out. The plate is'provided with needle openings 23 and thread lopers 24 are located below the base of the machine and operate in the conventional n 31, 32 and 33 being joined together as a unit as clearly indicated in Figure 3.-
It will be seen that each of said guides may accommodate and permit the passage of a strip of fabric, the upper and lower guides 31 and 32 providing for the passage of the outer shirred ribbons 34 and 35 and the narthe ribbons 34 and 35.
Fromthe foregoing, the operation of my improved machine will be lreadily understood. The three elements which make up the finished shirred ribbon, consisting of the outer shirred strips 34 and 35 and the central flat tape 36 are fed through their respective guides 31, and 33, as is indicated in Figure 1. The three strips of fabric pass together and on top of one another underneath 'the presser foot 6. .As said presser3 foot is grooved as at 17, it will be seen from Figure 2 that the central tape 36 lies within the groove 17 and does notcontact with the presser foot. p
The underfaces 18 on the part 10 of the presser foot bear down upon the side edges of the two strips 34 and35 and these two strips at their side edges are gripped'be-- tween the underfaces 13 and the grippers 22.
The grippers 22 therefore operate 'with their usual rocking movement and tend to gather the two strips 34 and 35. on the central tape 36, leaving said tape 36 ventirely flat and unshirred. The rounded front 16 of the presser foot 6 permits the ready enof the presser foot trance of the three layers of fabric as clearly disclosed in Figure 1.
It will be seen that the action Iof the grippers 22 co-operating' with the spaced underfaces on the presser` foot 6 readily shifts the outer gatheredl fabric strips 34 and 35 relative to the central strip 36 so that the gathered effect is produced in said outer strips, leaving the central strip entirely at and smooth.
A portion of the ribbon in its gathered form is shown in the upper part of Figure 9.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that my invention is not to be restricted to the exact embodiment" shownIk but is broad enouglfto cover all structures-coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
What I claim is:
ing a guide provided with a pluralityof ing a guide provided with three independent are fed, a groove in the. under face of the separate guide-ways for supplying apair ot' ribbons and a narrower tape between the ribbons, a presser ,foot under which said ribbons and tape are moved, gripping means operative under said foot for engaging with parts of the'ribbon and gathering the saine independently of the tape,fand a 'groove in the underface of the foot in whichthetape is located during the gathering operation.
2. A machine of the class described comprising a guide having three tubular guideways through which a. tape and a pair of ribbons on opposite sides of said tape are passed, a presser foot under which said tape and ribbons are passed, gripping and gathering means operative beneath said foot, said gripping and gathering means be-l ing adapted to engage the ribbons near their longitudinal edges, and a groove in the underface of` the foot in which the tape lies so that the same is not engaged by the gripping means.
3. A machine o f the class described havgrooves through which a pair of ribbons with a tape between them is fed, a presser foot under which said ribbons and tape are fed, spaced gripping faces on the vunder side of said foot, gathering means movable beneath the presser foot, and' adapted to grip the ribbons near their edges, the tape bein movable between the gripping faces on t e foot so that said tape is not gripped by the gathering means.
4. A machine of the class described having a guide provided with three channels located above one another and through which a pair of ribbons and a tape 'are adaptedto be fed, the wider ribbons passing through the upper and lower channels and the narrower tape through the central channel, a, foct'under which' the tape and ribbons foot through which the tape passes and spaced faces on opposite sides of the groove against which side portions of both ribbons bear, and gathering means movable below the foot and gripping the side portions of the ribbons against the under faceof the foot and gathering both of said ribbons independently Aof the. tape located between them. i
' Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 8th day of October, 1925. 1.- A machine of thev class described hav-A Hurtingr F. TIEDEMANN.
